Giulio Lasso (design)
St. Christina

1608-1620
"Quattro Canti" Square, Palermo, Sicily

When an image of St. Christina does not have her with a dart, her most common attribute, it is likely to have a wheel, as here. This is a reference to a torture ordered by her father when she would not recant. He had her tied to a wheel placed over a roaring fire. The book is also commonly used in images of this saint.

According to the sources I could find on the interner, Giulio Lasso was the designer of the entire square with its statues. Three men are credited with actually sculpting the statues: Gregorio Tedeschi, Carlo D'Aprile and Nunzio La Mattina.
